The Spain Language Assistant Program (Auxiliares de Conversación): Your Gateway to Living and Teaching in Spain

Maria, November 23, 2025November 23, 2025

Not sure yet if you want to live in Spain? Then this program could be your stepping stone as it’s an incredible opportunity to live, work, and immerse yourself in Spanish culture!

IMPORTANT: Guidelines for the upcoming 2026–2027 Language Assistant Program in Spain has not been announced yet but, hopefully, this article would give you enough time to prepare so by the time the applications are open, you are ready!

What’s This Program About?

The Language Assistant Program offers Filipino citizens a chance to spend 8-9 months in Spain (October to May/June), working as cultural ambassadors while supporting English language education in Spanish schools. You’ll help Spanish students improve their pronunciation and conversation skills while sharing Filipino culture with them.

Key Program Benefits

  • Monthly stipend: €800-1000 (depending on your placement region)
  • Health insurance coverage provided
  • 4-day work week: Only 14-16 classroom hours per week
  • Ample travel opportunities to explore Spain and Europe
  • Professional development through teaching experience

Essential Requirements for Filipino Applicants

As a Filipino applicant, you must:

  • Be a Philippine citizen currently residing in the Philippines
  • Hold a university degree from one of the partner universities (check the official website for the list)
  • Have native-like English proficiency
  • Possess an A1 Spanish certificate (DELE or SIELE) – this is mandatory for Filipinos
  • Be between 18-60 years old (as of January 1, 2026)
  • Have a clean police record (NBI clearance)
  • Be in good physical and mental health

Important Program Details

  • Maximum participation: Filipino assistants can participate for up to 2 years maximum
  • Interview required: All Filipino applicants must complete an interview
  • Application period: TBA / TBC
  • Placement options: Most Spanish regions available except Navarra, Cataluña, Ceuta, and Melilla

Your Role as a Language Assistant

You’ll be:

  • Supporting Spanish teachers of English or other subjects taught in English
  • Working in primary schools, secondary schools, or adult language schools
  • Planning activities to enhance oral comprehension and speaking skills
  • Developing cultural awareness activities
  • NOT responsible for discipline, evaluation, or parent-teacher conferences

Financial Planning Alert!

Critical reminder: First stipend payments often arrive in November or December, so you’ll need sufficient savings to cover your first 2-3 months of expenses in Spain (approximately €2,000-3,000 for initial setup and living costs).

How to Apply

  1. Register on PROFEX 2 – Spain’s official application portal
  2. Prepare your documents:
    • Valid passport (through June 2026)
    • University degree/transcript
    • Letter of recommendation (dated after September 2024)
    • Signed motivation letter (300 words)
    • A1 Spanish certificate
    • Health Statement and Statutory Declaration
  3. Complete the online application during the open period
  4. Schedule your mandatory interview with the Education Office

Regional Placement Options

You can select up to three regional preferences. Popular destinations include:

  • Madrid (program runs until June 30)
  • Andalucía
  • Valencia
  • País Vasco
  • Galicia
  • And many more!

Cities and rural placements are both available, giving you flexibility in choosing your Spanish adventure.

Why This Program is Perfect for Filipinos

  • Cultural exchange: Share Filipino culture while experiencing Spanish life firsthand
