How to Exchange Your Philippine Driver’s License for a Spanish One Maria, February 2, 2025June 2, 2025 Did you know you can exchange your Philippine driver’s license (professional or non-professional) for a Spanish driver’s license? Yup, no need to start from scratch! All you need is a medical exam to confirm you’re fit to drive. I went through this process myself, and spoiler alert—it was surprisingly smooth. Let me walk you through it step-by-step! If you’re more of a visual learner, check out my YouTube video where I dive into all the details about how I exchanged my Philippine Driver’s License for a Spanish one. Is Your License Eligible? First, check if your country is included in Spain’s list of treaty countries. You can’t exchange your license if: Your country isn’t on the list. Your license was originally issued in a non-treaty country and later exchanged. You got your license after becoming a legal resident in Spain. It’s a digital PDF license from Venezuela (doesn’t meet EU standards). Pro tip: Don’t renew your PH license after becoming a legal resident in Spain. I almost made this mistake, which would’ve disqualified me. What Do You Need? Legal residency in Spain (DNI/TIE/NIE or passport) A valid, original driver’s license in plastic card format—with date showing that you got the license before becoming a resident of Spain Medical certificate (less than 3 months old) 2 passport-sized photos My Process Getting a DGT appointment was impossible, so I used an agency, Gestmotor. Timeline & Costs: January 30: Presented my driver’s license and signed forms at Gestmotor March 19: Medical check-up (29€) and passport photo (8€) March 22: Submitted all docs and paid necessary fees (98€) May 5: Got approval & temporary driving permit June 28: Received the physical Spanish license card in the mail Final Thoughts If you’re eligible, don’t wait—start the process! Agencies like Gestmotor can make it hassle-free. Driving through Spain’s scenic roads with your new license? Priceless. Got questions? Drop a comment or send me an email. Expat Life
